Eunpyeong-gu 'Human Rights Protector' Safeguards Child Rights in Child Welfare Facilities

Appointment of Human Rights Protectors for 6 Child Welfare Facilities in Eunpyeong-gu... Strengthening Human Rights Protection and Abuse Prevention for Children in Care with Facility-Specific Activities for the Next 3 Years

Eunpyeong-gu 'Human Rights Protector' Safeguards Child Rights in Child Welfare Facilities

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) appointed human rights protectors for children in six child welfare facilities on the 5th to take responsibility for the human rights of children under protection.

Since 2017, human rights protectors have been designated and operated for each facility through external personnel to prevent child abuse within child welfare facilities and strengthen the protection of the human rights of children under protection.

The six reappointed human rights protectors for child welfare facilities consist of ▲ a member of the Community Social Security Council's Child Committee ▲ the director of the Our Neighborhood Care Center ▲ a teacher ▲ a police officer ▲ a daycare center director ▲ and a human rights center staff member from the Eunpyeong-gu Office Audit Department. Over the next three years, they will visit local child welfare facilities to regularly check and inspect the status of child protection, working conditions of staff, facility safety, and meal services.

In July of last year, Eunpyeong-gu established a Child Protection Team in accordance with the government's inclusive national child policy, deploying dedicated child abuse public officials and child abuse specialists to build a public child protection system that proactively responds to child abuse.

Eunpyeong-gu's child policy is based on the belief that "a city where children are happy is a city where everyone wants to live."

This year, the district will make every effort to detect abused children early and prevent child abuse in advance, expecting that the activities of human rights protectors in child welfare facilities will contribute to the prevention of child abuse and the promotion of human rights within these facilities.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, "The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child defines children as subjects with dignity and rights, specifying the rights to survival and protection as fundamental rights. Child welfare facilities where human rights are guaranteed are crucial for children under protection to live happy lives and grow into healthy members of society. Therefore, I ask for special attention and care."
