[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden, who has been increasing the level of criticism against China, announced that the Department of Defense will establish a task force to formulate a defense strategy against China.
On the 10th (local time), President Biden, during his visit to the Department of Defense, stated that there is a need to respond to the growing challenges posed by China.
President Biden explained that the task force will provide recommendations to the Secretary of Defense within a few months regarding key priorities related to China.
He also emphasized, "This is how we respond to China's challenges," adding that the U.S. will never hesitate to use force if necessary to protect the essential interests of the United States and its global allies. However, he said that force should be a last resort, not the first option.
According to the Department of Defense announcement, 15 people from both civilian and military sectors will participate in the task force. The head of the task force is Ely Ratner, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
The task force is expected to address issues such as the number, location, and equipment of troops, technology, intelligence, alliances and partnerships, and military relations with China. If the task force operates as intended, a review of U.S. Forces Korea is also likely to take place.
The Wall Street Journal predicted that there will be a broader review of how troops are stationed in the region. Other foreign media reported that recommendations are expected to be presented within four months.
President Biden has recently been sending continuous signals of pressure against China. He has warned that competition with China will intensify and stated that he will confront China’s challenges. Regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping, he expressed the view that there is no corner of democracy.
Meanwhile, when asked whether he would take action against China for concealing information related to COVID-19, President Biden responded, "I am interested in all information."
