Dongjak-gu, Recruiting Elderly Participants for Community Volunteer Activities

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) is recruiting senior citizen volunteers to participate in community service activities to support the healthy and active aging of elderly residents.

The application period is until the 15th, and seniors aged 65 or older residing in Dongjak-gu who do not receive the basic pension are eligible to apply. However, participation is restricted for those involved in the Seoul Citizen Safety Job Project, basic pension recipients, and others.

A total of 45 people will be recruited, and applications can be submitted by visiting the local community service center corresponding to the resident registration address.

If the number of applicants exceeds the quota, priority will be given to new participants. Once the candidates are finalized, only successful applicants will be individually notified on the 26th.

Selected seniors will perform volunteer activities as ‘Children Safety Guardians’ and ‘Cultural Heritage Guardians’ for a total of 9 months from March to November, working 1 to less than 2 hours per day, 12 times per month.

The ‘Children Safety Guardians’ will be responsible for guiding safety on elementary school commuting routes, directing traffic at crosswalks, and patrolling around schools, while the ‘Cultural Heritage Guardians’ will protect the environment around cultural heritage sites and maintain the facilities.

Additionally, participants will receive accident insurance support and an activity allowance of up to 108,000 KRW per month.

For more details, inquiries can be made to the Job Policy Division.

Last year, the ‘Senior Community Service Activities’ program operated with 44 seniors participating as children safety guardians at 10 locations including Noryangjin Elementary School, and as cultural heritage guardians at 2 locations including Yangnyeongdaegun Changbin An’s Tomb and Lee Jeong-yeong’s Tomb, conducting community service activities at a total of 12 sites.

Yoon So-yeon, head of the Job Policy Division, said, “Through this project, we hope seniors maintain their health and feel a sense of accomplishment through volunteering for the community,” and added, “We ask for active participation from those interested.”
