[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] An incident occurred in an apartment in Daegu where elementary school students vandalized residents' packages and scattered cooking oil and flour on the floor, causing chaos. The police have apprehended the students, and it is reported that their parents have pledged to compensate for the damages directly.

The Dalseong Police Station in Daegu announced on the 5th that they are reviewing measures against three elementary school students who went around a Daegu apartment, damaging others' packages and scattering cooking oil and flour on the floor.

Among the three students, it was confirmed that one is under 10 years old. According to current law, children under the age of 10 are classified as 'criminally irresponsible juveniles' and do not receive criminal or protective measures even if they commit a crime. Those aged 10 to under 14, classified as 'juvenile offenders subject to protective measures,' receive protective measures instead of criminal punishment.

According to the police, the parents of the students reportedly promised to compensate the apartment residents for the damages on their own. The police plan to review whether other measures can be taken.

The incident became known after a resident of the apartment posted photos directly on an online community the day before (the 4th).

The resident, who posted under the title "The apartment is in chaos," explained, "Three elementary school students went around each building of the apartment, tearing open all the package wrappings and throwing them everywhere," adding, "They scattered and crushed cooking oil, flour, lotion cream, health supplements, fruits, and other items from gift sets received for the Lunar New Year all over the apartment."

Photos posted by netizens show flour scattered on the apartment hallway floor. Additionally, a notice on the apartment stairs reads, "Please refrain from using the stairs as they are slippery due to oil."

Regarding this, a netizen said, "One resident slipped after stepping on cooking oil," and "The door locks of 5 to 6 households were damaged because lotion was smeared thickly on them."

They continued, "Six police cars arrived, and later the students were caught through closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage."

They added, "The residents, the management office, the residents' representative meeting, and the parents of the elementary students are all in shock," and asked, "Why on earth are they doing this? I heard that because they are elementary students, they cannot be punished. Tomorrow will be hell again."
