[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] The Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) is facing controversy for requiring dual nationality inmates to choose one nationality. As tensions escalate between China and Western countries, authorities are being criticized for pressuring inmates in vulnerable situations by forcing them to make a choice.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 5th, the Canadian Foreign Ministry reported on the 2nd that a Canadian dual nationality citizen imprisoned in Hong Kong was asked by Hong Kong authorities to choose between the two nationalities.

China does not allow dual nationality. If dual nationals are forced to renounce their foreign nationality, they can no longer receive assistance from that country.

SCMP reported that among approximately 7,200 inmates currently imprisoned in Hong Kong, about 100 are dual nationals. The issue has extended to Western countries. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State criticized, "Dual nationals will be forced to choose under threats without the opportunity to understand the consequences of their nationality selection."

They also stated, "Regardless of how the Hong Kong government classifies inmates, we will continue to pursue contact with U.S. citizens arrested in Hong Kong."

The British Consulate in Hong Kong also said, "Regarding opinions that consular support for dual nationality inmates may be prohibited, we are requesting the position of Hong Kong authorities."
