[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Kwon Chil-seung, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry) and the Small and Medium Business Corporation (Chairman Kim Hak-do, hereinafter referred to as SBC) announced on the 5th that they held the "1st U-Commerce Competition (hereinafter UCC)" at the JW Marriott Hotel in Seoul and simultaneously conducted the 2021 e-commerce specialized university agreement signing ceremony.

The e-commerce specialized university operation project is a program designed to cultivate professional personnel for entering the global e-commerce market. The Ministry and SBC designated seven e-commerce specialized universities for the first time last year and trained a total of 396 people.

At the UCC held that day, students who completed the e-commerce specialized university course last year presented cases where they registered products from small and medium-sized ventures on global e-commerce shopping malls such as Amazon, eBay, Shopee, and Qoo10, and directly handled marketing, sales, logistics, and customs clearance, sharing their achievements.

Based on the combined results of the public online voting and evaluations by expert judges, the grand prize was awarded to Soongsil University’s "Sesangeul Muldeurim" team (Lee Ye-eun, Park Soo-bin, Yoon Hwa-young, Lee Joo-young, Choi Soo-hwan). They were highly praised for generating export results worth approximately 54 million KRW by selling vegan-certified products to the US and European markets through GoBiz Korea using a business-to-business (B2B) method.

The Excellence Award went to Soongsil University’s "Chalkolate" team; the Merit Award was given to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies’ "GSF" team and Korea University’s "Sosten" team; and the Encouragement Award was awarded to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies’ "G+" team, Mokpo National University’s "Segyero-yu" team, and Paichai University’s "Jeonsang Tteoksang" team. The seven winning teams received commendations from the Minister of SMEs and Startups and the Chairman of SBC, along with a total of 35 million KRW in e-commerce startup and employment incentives. In the finals, 10 teams that passed the preliminary round out of 70 teams from seven universities participated. The public online voting held by SBC on the GoBiz Korea website in December last year attracted high interest with a total of 3,967 participants.

Additionally, in the afternoon, a signing ceremony was held with the seven universities designated as e-commerce specialized universities for 2021. This year’s e-commerce specialized universities include Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology, Korea University, Mokpo National University, Paichai University, Yuhan University, Jeonbuk National University, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. These universities will operate dedicated e-commerce courses to train 350 e-commerce professionals with theoretical knowledge and practical sales experience. Graduates will be supported through linked government support projects to help them grow as young entrepreneurs and global e-commerce experts.

Chairman Kim Hak-do stated, "The global e-commerce market is explosively growing centered on mobile and social commerce, which presents new opportunities for small and medium-sized ventures seeking overseas expansion," adding, "SBC will work together with the seven universities to cultivate global e-commerce professionals and take the lead in laying the foundation for South Korea to become a powerhouse in online exports."
