[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Gongneung-dong Dokkaebi Market Merchants Association, a traditional market in Nowon-gu, is holding a sharing event to provide 떡국 ingredients (beef, rice cake soup rice cakes, dumplings) and COVID-19 prevention supplies (masks, hand sanitizers) to help underprivileged residents have a warm Lunar New Year holiday.

The Gongneung-dong Dokkaebi Market Merchants Association (53 Dongil-ro 180-gil) planned the 떡국 ingredients sharing event to express gratitude to local residents who have used the market, after learning that low-income marginalized groups are going through even more difficult times despite the merchants themselves facing hardships due to COVID-19.

Originally, the merchants intended to provide warm 떡국 directly during the biggest holiday, Seollal, but due to the government’s restriction on gatherings of five or more people to prevent the spread of COVID-19, they decided to convey their hearts by sharing 떡국 ingredients in a non-face-to-face manner.

The 떡국 ingredients will be delivered to 150 low-income households in the area from the 8th to the 9th.

Oh Seung-rok, the district mayor, said, “I express my gratitude to the Gongneung-dong Dokkaebi Market merchants who are sending warm hearts to low-income residents around them at a time when traditional market small business owners are facing more difficulties than ever due to COVID-19.”
