Hillary, Capable but Facing Cold Winds vs Merkel, Competent and Warm
"A Motherly Role for Mayors Is Needed"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Park Young-sun, former Minister of SMEs and Startups, who is running for the Seoul mayoral by-election in April under the slogan of a "mother-like mayor," emphasized her intention not to engage in "negative (defamatory) campaigning" by stating, "I will not do anything that causes harm."
On the 4th, Park appeared on Park Si-young TV and mentioned the 2019 National Assembly Fast-Track clash incident during the time when Na Kyung-won was the floor leader of the Liberty Korea Party, saying, "I became fed up with politics after serving four terms as a member of the Guro District (constituency)."
She recalled, "At that time, it was chaos, called an animal parliament," and explained the reason for avoiding negative campaigning by saying, "I thought, how could they behave like that, picking on words and slandering others to cause harm? I decided never to do that again."
Instead, Park plans to leverage her ministerial experience as a strength to focus on "policy" and approach voters as a "mother-like mayor."
Park said, "The lives of ordinary people have become very difficult due to COVID-19, and in such a situation, there needs to be someone to care for those who want to rely on someone," adding, "I think there should be a role for a mother-like mayor."
Referring to Hillary Clinton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Park emphasized, "I have met both. Hillary Clinton is capable but felt very cold and harsh, whereas Chancellor Merkel is equally capable but warm and kind."
She continued, "I don't think I am broad-minded enough yet to be a mother-like mayor, but I will try. Such a mayor is needed," reiterating her commitment.
