[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] BJ Ttaengcho, who conducted a broadcast where he made a woman with an intellectual disability undress after promising to give her money on an internet broadcast, has been arrested by the police.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency announced on the 3rd that a detention warrant was issued by the court for BJ Ttaengcho (26), who is suspected of violating the Welfare of Disabled Persons Act and other charges.
BJ Ttaengcho is accused of forcibly molesting a woman in her 20s with a level 3 intellectual disability during an internet broadcast at the home of another BJ A (37, female) earlier last month.
He is also suspected of exploiting the disabled woman for profit by having her appear on the broadcast without providing any compensation.
The case came to public attention after a related post was uploaded on an online community in January. The author of the post claimed that BJ Ttaengcho was making money on various broadcasting platforms by exploiting a woman with an intellectual disability.
In particular, the author stated, "He takes around a person with no cognitive ability at all, buys her a bowl of jajangmyeon all day, receives paid items on his broadcast, and even makes her react," adding, "On top of that, he made her do 'beotbang' (a broadcast where the person undresses)."
In response to the controversy, BJ Ttaengcho turned on his internet broadcast and explained, "The reason for doing the beotbang was to bring some fun and laughter to the viewers with her consent," and added, "She never expressed dislike. We are dating and in love."
Earlier, the police had obtained a detention warrant for female BJ A and applied for a detention warrant for BJ Ttaengcho as well, but it was rejected once. The police then conducted additional investigations into other crimes against the same victim and reapplied for the warrant, resulting in BJ Ttaengcho’s detention.
Meanwhile, the police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the case.
