[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] International concern and criticism over the military coup in Myanmar are spreading. The Group of Seven (G7) expressed deep concern and jointly condemned the situation on the 3rd (local time).


According to foreign media including AFP, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries?United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan?stated in a joint declaration issued in London, UK, that "We stand united in condemning the Myanmar coup." The statement was reportedly issued jointly by the G7 and the EU High Representative, according to foreign media.


They added, "We are deeply concerned about the detention of political leaders and civil society activists, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint."


They also said, "We urge the military to immediately halt the declaration of a state of emergency and return power to the civilian government," and "We call for the release of all those unjustly detained and respect for human rights and the rule of law."


They further asserted that the results of last November’s general election must be respected and that the parliament should be convened promptly.
