[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., which signed the first large-scale investment attraction agreement of the year with Gwangju Metropolitan City, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its electric vehicle battery pack factory on the afternoon of the 2nd and began full-scale construction.
The groundbreaking ceremony held at the Pyeongdong 2nd Industrial Complex site was attended by Lee Sang-woong, Chairman of Sebang Group; Cha Ju-ho, CEO of Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd.; Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju; Kim Sam-ho, Mayor of Gwangsan District; Yang Hyang-ja, Member of the National Assembly; and Jung Chun-bo, Chairman of Shinyoung Construction.
Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd. is a company with new technologies in the fields of auxiliary batteries for built-in car cameras and electric vehicle lithium-ion battery module manufacturing. On the 6th of last month, it signed an agreement with Gwangju City to invest 115 billion KRW to build an electric vehicle battery pack manufacturing plant with a total floor area of 33,000㎡ on a 29,000㎡ site within the Pyeongdong 2nd Industrial Complex.
This is the first large-scale investment project of the year, and actual investment has been made in less than a month since signing the investment attraction agreement with Gwangju City, which is expected to be a boon to the local economy struggling due to COVID-19.
The factory is scheduled to be completed by June, undergo test operations, and from March next year, produce 420,000 battery modules annually. Once fully operational, it will create 250 jobs.
In particular, the factory to be built this time will be established as a state-of-the-art automated facility that safely and efficiently controls the process of modularizing and packing cells of eco-friendly electric vehicle batteries, operating as an environmentally friendly assembly plant with no emission of pollutants.
Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd. plans to use the newly established Gwangju factory as a foothold for exports to overseas markets.
In this regard, since last year, Gwangju City has formed a dedicated team and made multiple contacts with Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., providing comprehensive support such as land acquisition and factory groundbreaking to realize the investment attraction.
Going forward, the city plans to provide administrative services necessary for factory construction and operation, and support investment incentives such as tax reductions and subsidies in accordance with relevant laws and ordinances.
Gwangju City is expected to solidify its status as a hub for eco-friendly vehicles, as it will complete the Eco-friendly Automobile Parts Certification Center in the nearby Bitgreen Industrial Complex in July, and the Gwangju-type job factory, Global Motors, is also equipped to produce eco-friendly vehicles in the future.
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “I applaud Sebang Group’s bold challenge and the innovative leadership of its management for swiftly proceeding from investment decision to groundbreaking ceremony,” and added, “We will spare no administrative support so that Sebang Lithium Battery can grow and develop into a global electric vehicle battery company based on the Gwangju factory.”
