Incheon Traffic Accident Death Rate Ranks 3rd Lowest... 9 Districts Rank High in 'Traffic Culture Index' Incheon City Hall

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] According to the results of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2020 Traffic Culture Index Survey,' all nine districts and counties of Incheon (excluding Ongjin) ranked among the top nationwide.

The Traffic Culture Index evaluates and quantifies indicators related to driving behavior, pedestrian behavior, and traffic safety annually across 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide, serving as basic data for traffic safety policies.

On the 30th, Incheon City reported that the Traffic Culture Index for its nine districts and counties was 84.35 points, significantly exceeding the national average of 78.94 points. Notably, Namdong-gu ranked first nationwide among 69 autonomous districts.

Namdong-gu scored 49.51 points in driving behavior and 20.17 points in traffic safety, both higher than the national average. Indicators such as driver signal compliance rate (99.26%) and motorcycle helmet-wearing rate (98.56%) ranked among the top. The continuous efforts to establish a traffic safety culture, including the expansion of child protection zones, were highly evaluated.

Additionally, Incheon City recorded a decrease of 24 traffic accident fatalities (18.0%) compared to 2019, ranking third nationwide in the reduction rate of traffic accident deaths. Among the fatalities, pedestrian deaths decreased by 17 (32.1%), cargo truck-related deaths by 14 (31.1%), and elderly deaths by 17 (32.7%).

The city believes that the 'Safe Speed 5030' policy, fully implemented since December last year to reduce the likelihood and severity of pedestrian traffic accidents, has greatly contributed to improving driving behavior.

Furthermore, the 'Senior Driver Voluntary License Surrender Incentive Program,' implemented since 2019, is also analyzed to have achieved its intended outcomes.

An official from Incheon City stated, "This year as well, we will prepare customized measures for vulnerable factors through traffic accident analysis to create a safe and pleasant traffic environment that prioritizes people."
