[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seongjanghyun) will operate a native English classroom at Byeolbat Small Library (Daesagwan-ro 34-gil 49, Jecheon Hall 4th floor) from March 8 to December 15 in 3 terms (26 sessions per term).
The 1st term is from March 8 to June 9, the 2nd term from June 14 to September 8, and the 3rd term from September 13 to December 15.
The recruitment target is elementary school students residing in Yongsan-gu, and the classes are divided into two levels: beginner (grades 1?4) and intermediate (grades 3?6).
Operating hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM (beginner) and 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM (intermediate), each for one hour, with online classes as the default format.
Face-to-face classes will be possible if social distancing measures are eased.
Each class has a capacity of 15 students. The curriculum includes phonics (a pronunciation-focused language teaching method) and basic/practical conversation. Classes are conducted by native instructors affiliated with SLI Lifelong Education Center. The tuition fee is 60,000 KRW per term.
Those wishing to participate in the 1st term class can apply through the district’s education comprehensive portal from 9:30 AM on February 1 until 6 PM on February 15.
Applications are accepted online only. If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, the district will select students through a computerized lottery.
The selection results will be announced on February 17 at 2 PM via the district’s education comprehensive portal.
The level test for class placement is scheduled for February 19?22. Tuition fees must be paid by March 4.
A district official said, “In addition to the native language classes at the Dream Tree Comprehensive Town, we are opening a native English classroom at Byeolbat Small Library. If the COVID-19 situation improves, we will conduct more vivid face-to-face classes.”
Byeolbat Small Library opened in October 2019 as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Life SOC project. It has an area of 166.25㎡ and includes a reading room, Global Zone, and program room, with a collection of 10,000 books. Although it was closed for a period due to COVID-19, it will reopen on February 1.
Yongsan-gu Mayor Seongjanghyun said, “The academic gap among children is widening due to COVID-19. Even in an online format, we will conduct classes to enhance local children’s English proficiency.”
Within Yongsan-gu, there are 19 public libraries including 17 small libraries. The district plans to promote library use through expanding new book collections, operating specialized programs, and building an integrated network. Reopening schedules and new book lists for each facility can be found on the Yongsan-gu Public Library integrated website.
