[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Kerry, the U.S. climate envoy, criticized China's carbon neutrality goal for lacking a 'methodology.'

On the 27th (local time), Kerry said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) virtual meeting, "China says it will do something by 2060, but there is not even a clue showing how it will achieve the goal."

This appears to be a remark targeting the carbon neutrality goal announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the UN General Assembly last September. At that time, President Xi promised to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. However, since then, China has taken actions contrary to its promise, such as continuing to build coal-fired power plants.

President Biden has actively pursued eco-friendly policies, signing an executive order to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement as his first act after taking office last week. If the Biden administration implements strong climate change policies, it is expected to create leverage to pressure China.
