[IssueLaw] "Artists Suffer More" Impact of COVID-19... Doubts Over Effectiveness of 'Universal Employment Insurance Expansion'

[Asia Economy PD Yoon Jin-geun] Amid the difficult times the entire nation is facing due to the impact of COVID-19, freelancers, actors, and other workers in special employment types remain in the blind spots of employment insurance, making their lives comparatively harder. At least, the government's announcement of the 'National Employment Insurance Roadmap' has drawn the attention of artists.

On Asia Economy's YouTube channel 'Lee Park Choi Legal Center,' actor Woo Bora appeared to examine whether this government policy can provide some relief.

According to the government’s plan, starting from December last year, employment insurance will be applied to artists, followed by special employment workers this year, platform workers next year, and by 2023, it will be expanded to include self-employed individuals.

However, it is still unclear how effectively this will practically help artists.

Actor Woo said, "It is common that the rehearsal period before going on stage is not included in the employment period," adding, "In many cases, there is no (employment) contract itself." She emphasized, "More specific employment insurance standards tailored to the (artists’) lifestyle are necessary."
