[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] GS Caltex and Amorepacific announced on the 28th that they signed a business agreement at the GS Tower in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to systematically recycle plastic cosmetic containers.
Through this agreement, GS Caltex will recycle 100 tons of Amorepacific plastic cosmetic containers annually into eco-friendly compounded resin and apply it to cosmetic containers. The application rate of Amorepacific products is expected to reach 20% this year and increase to about 50% by 2025.
GS Caltex has been expanding the use of eco-friendly raw materials for resource efficiency and carbon reduction based on compounded resin made from recycled plastic materials. Compounded resin is a functional plastic widely used as raw material for cosmetic containers, automotive parts, and home appliance components, and GS Caltex is the only domestic petroleum company producing it.
The two companies plan to expand the use of eco-friendly raw materials through plastic recycling, which accounts for 63% of cosmetic containers. In particular, they will focus on upcycling methods that create new value by mixing materials with various physical properties in plastic cosmetic containers to improve performance and quality.
This method increases the resource circulation rate by newly producing GS Caltex’s eco-friendly compounded resin, made from recycled plastic materials, using plastic cosmetic containers collected by Amorepacific.
GS Caltex’s emphasis on strengthening eco-friendly business has been prominent since President Heo Se-hong took office in 2019. GS Caltex plans to enhance its ESG (environment, social, governance) capabilities based on compounded resin made from recycled plastic materials. The company started its eco-friendly compounded resin business using recycled plastics in 2010, and its current annual production volume of eco-friendly compounded resin has grown more than 2.5 times to 25,000 tons compared to the initial production volume.
A GS Caltex official stated, "To reduce carbon emissions, companies with eco-friendly leadership must establish a circular economy system," adding, "GS Caltex will fulfill its role as a platform for plastic recycling with eco-friendly compounded resin technology accumulated over the past 10 years."
