[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] Go Min-jung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Jo Su-jin, a member of the People Power Party. Jo sparked controversy by mentioning Go on Facebook the previous day, writing, "Even if a concubine in the Joseon Dynasty gave birth to a prince, she would not have been treated like this."
On the 27th, Go stated on Facebook, "I have submitted a complaint against Representative Jo Su-jin. I am also proceeding with a lawsuit regarding the false statements made about me, such as the 'allegation of false academic credentials on election campaign materials.' I am reviewing both civil and criminal actions."
Go graduated from Kyung Hee University's Suwon International Campus, but was accused by some of falsely listing on her Google profile that she graduated from the Seoul campus. However, she was cleared of charges in September last year.
Go said, "At first, I was bewildered, then angry, then sad, and now I feel calm. I have thought a lot about what kind of actions I should take as a politician. I have also considered that this might be a political dispute that politicians must endure."
She continued, "However, Jo Su-jin is a member of the National Assembly of the main opposition party, the People Power Party, receiving taxpayers' money. Some may say I should just endure this because it is a dispute with a fellow lawmaker, but I do not intend to do so."
Go also demanded that Jo officially apologize to the residents of Gwangjin, her electoral district. She said, "I know I was not elected because I am outstanding. The evaluation of me will be judged in the next election. However, the statement that I was elected 'riding on the power of the mountain' disregards the judgment of the residents who cast their precious votes. I cannot tolerate remarks that belittle the residents of Gwangjin."
She added, "I will watch not only Jo Su-jin personally but also the People Power Party, as a responsible political party, for discerning measures and judgments."
