Establishing the Pan-Huanghae Economic Block Connecting Yeongjong~Ganghwa~Gaeseong·Haeju
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The construction project of the West Sea Inter-Korean Peace Road, a key pledge of Incheon Mayor Park Namchun related to West Sea peace and also a campaign promise of President Moon Jae-in, has entered its main phase.
On the afternoon of the 27th, Incheon City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the West Sea Inter-Korean Peace Road project, the Yeongjong?Sindo section, at the Sindo Port dock in Ongjin County. About 50 people attended, including Jeon Hae-cheol, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Park Namchun, Mayor of Incheon, and Bae Junyoung, a member of the People Power Party.
The Yeongjong?Sindo Peace Road, connecting Yeongjong Island in Jung-gu, Incheon, and Sindo-ri in Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin County, is a 4.05 km long two-lane bridge. The total project cost is 124.5 billion KRW, with completion scheduled for 2025.
2.5 km of the bridge is over the sea, and it also includes a pedestrian path that doubles as a bicycle road, allowing people to travel between the two islands without cars after completion.
As a result, except for Jangbongdo, all areas in Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin County, including Sindo, Sido, and Modo, will be accessible by vehicle, improving residents' convenience. Incheon City plans to continue consultations with the government to promote the Modo?Jangbongdo connecting bridge project as well.
The Yeongjong?Sindo Peace Road is also the starting section of the West Sea Inter-Korean Peace Road, which will eventually extend to Kaesong, North Korea.
The West Sea Inter-Korean Peace Road spans a total length of 80.4 km, including Yeongjong?Sindo?Ganghwa·Gyodongdo (18.0 km), Ganghwa?Kaesong Industrial Complex (45.7 km), and Ganghwa?Haeju (16.7 km), with a total project cost of 2.4322 trillion KRW.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Incheon Mayor Park Namchun said, "The Peace Road is not the end but the beginning. Starting today, we plan to extend the Peace Road to Ganghwa, Kaesong, and Haeju," adding, "This connection will once again place the Peace Road at the center of the West Sea Peace Cooperation Belt when the winds of peace blow across the Korean Peninsula."
