[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] Na Kyung-won, former member of the People Power Party challenging the Seoul mayoral by-election, argued that a 'selective attendance system' should be implemented.

On the 27th, Na stated on Facebook, "I believe that at least until the first semester of this year, a selective attendance system should be temporarily implemented to guarantee parents a wide range of choices."

Na explained, "As the March school attendance season approaches, many parents' attention is focused. The problem is that parents' opinions are completely divided. Some say, 'Please let us send our children to school,' while others say, 'No, who will take responsibility if they catch COVID-19?'"

He continued, "The government plans to expand attendance mainly for kindergartens and lower grades of elementary school. As expected, there was an outcry of opinions saying 'We cannot send our children to school.' The government reportedly does not intend to provide so-called attendance choice rights," he added.

Na emphasized that the selective attendance system should be implemented until the first semester of this year. He said, "In a situation where anxiety about COVID-19 infection remains high, mandating attendance uniformly can be a significant psychological burden for some."

Na also said, "I once again strongly feel the need to provide quality educational services for ordinary citizens," adding, "The 'education balance policy,' such as the 25-25 education plan (creating 25 excellent school districts in 25 districts) that I proposed, is urgent."
