News Leaves Residents Sighing in Regret... Inside the Building with Over 130 People Quarantined, Activity is 'Busy'
Inside the stairwell of a building at TCS International School in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, where the highest number of 100 confirmed cases in the Gwangju area have been reported, lights are repeatedly turning on and off, showing a busy scene.
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Around 9:30 PM on the 26th, the area near TCS International School in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City was unusually quiet, even considering the late hour.
This was due to the announcement by Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop during a briefing that 100 people, the highest number ever in the Gwangju area, had tested positive for COVID-19.
The Gwangju TCS International School is an unlicensed educational facility operated by the IM Mission organization to train missionaries. It was a place where students, faculty, and church members from all over the country stayed together, and a mass outbreak was confirmed through a full inspection of educational facilities in Gwangju.
Citizens passing nearby pulled their masks up tightly and lowered their heads as they hurried past.
One citizen, seemingly unaware of the news, approached reporters to ask what was happening, and upon hearing that many had tested positive, sighed, saying, "Aigo."
Although the surrounding area was quiet, the inside of the building, where about 130 people were currently quarantined, appeared hectic.
The lights on the staircases inside the building from the first to the fourth floor flickered on and off several times.
In front of Gwangju TCS International School, officials from the Gwangsan District Health Center of Gwangju Metropolitan City are busy setting up a temporary on-site situation room.
Soon after, staff from the Gwangsan-gu Public Health Center arrived, setting up desks and chairs in a tent they had prepared in advance and connecting electrical wires.
The tent will be used as a temporary control room to discuss the transfer and quarantine plans for 100 confirmed cases, 26 people who tested negative, and 9 people awaiting test results inside the building.
A Gwangsan-gu Public Health Center official said, "The test results have just been announced, and the city of Gwangju and the health center are discussing how to transfer the confirmed cases," adding, "To enable faster action, we will set up a control room on site to respond."
Meanwhile, as of 9:30 PM on the same day, 100 people related to the Gwangsan-gu TCS International School had tested positive.
Most of the students staying together here are minors aged from 6 years old to teenagers, and 66 of them are known to be from other regions.
