[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Changwon City in Gyeongnam has rolled up its sleeves to reduce fine dust, which causes cancer and respiratory diseases.
On the 26th, Changwon City announced that it will spend 6 billion won this year to support the installation costs of fine dust prevention facilities in small-scale workplaces.
Support of up to 90% of replacement costs will be provided to small and medium-sized enterprises, non-profit corporations and organizations, office and commercial buildings, and apartments that intend to replace old air pollution prevention facilities or switch from general burners to low-NOx burners that reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Last year, the city supported 13.5 billion won for replacing air pollution prevention facilities at 135 workplaces and 2.5 billion won for installing low-NOx burners at 387 workplaces.
The city confirmed that dust concentration from companies that replaced prevention facilities last year decreased by 45%.
Changwon is surrounded by mountains on all sides, resulting in poor air circulation. There is a large-scale national industrial complex that emits pollutants, so the air quality is not very good, and the city is investing heavily in air pollution prevention projects.
Lee Jeong-geun, Director of the Environment and Greenery Bureau, said, “This project reduces the economic burden on small-scale businesses struggling to invest in environmental facilities and has achieved significant effects in improving air quality such as fine dust. We ask for the participation of many businesses this year as well.”
