Yeosu-si to Accept Applications for COVID-19 Emergency Disaster Relief Fund Starting Next Month

Prepaid Card Available for Immediate Pickup Upon Application at Local Eup, Myeon, or Dong Community Centers

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) announced on the 26th that it will provide emergency disaster relief funds of 250,000 KRW per person to all citizens and will begin accepting applications for the emergency disaster relief funds starting from the 1st of next month.

The Yeosu City Council held a one-point session the day before and passed the supplementary budget bill for the disaster relief funds.

The recipients are citizens residing in Yeosu City as of 0:00 on the 18th and multicultural families registered as foreigners, targeting 285,000 people, with a total cost of 71.25 billion KRW.

The payment procedure is simplified as much as possible; applicants can visit their resident registration address's eup/myeon/dong community service center to apply and receive a prepaid card immediately. Those aged 65 or older can choose between a prepaid card or cash.

Among foreigners, multicultural families and unregistered newborns before the 18th can also apply at the eup/myeon/dong community service center upon registering the birth.

The application period is from the 1st to the 26th of next month. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, a 5-day rotation system based on the last digit of the applicant’s birth year will be implemented during the first week from the 1st to the 5th.

For application methods, families registered under the same resident registration can have the head of the household or a household member apply and receive the funds on behalf of the family collectively, while cohabitants must apply separately.

To promote local economic consumption and increase sales for small business owners, the funds can be used within the Yeosu area until August 31, and cannot be used at large supermarkets, entertainment establishments, or online shopping malls.

Mayor Kwon Oh-bong of Yeosu said, “The first quarter of this year was judged to be the most difficult period for citizens before the third wave continues and COVID-19 vaccinations are fully underway, so we decided to provide the funds.” He added, “We hope that this emergency disaster relief fund will offer comfort and encouragement to citizens who have actively participated in quarantine efforts despite inconveniences and business losses, and that the prepaid card with usage restrictions within the region will revitalize local small businesses and the regional economy.”

Meanwhile, the city plans to accept ‘non-receipt applications’ from citizens who wish to donate, and the funds returned as revenue will be additionally provided to small business owners affected by COVID-19 who are experiencing relatively greater difficulties due to gathering restrictions and bans.
