[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 26th that it has signed a contract to build two large container ships for an Oceania region shipowner for 229.2 billion KRW.
The vessels ordered this time are large container ships capable of carrying up to 13,000 20ft containers at once. Equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for nitrogen oxide reduction and ballast water treatment systems, they comply with environmental regulations. They also feature fuel-saving devices and the smart ship solution S-Bessel, enabling economical operation. The ships are scheduled to be built by December next year and delivered sequentially.
Samsung Heavy Industries previously secured an order for one liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier on the 5th, making this the second order this year. With contracts worth about 400 million USD secured this month alone, the situation has improved compared to last year's first quarter total of 300 million USD. The company stated, "Although uncertainties remain in the newbuilding order market this year, it is expected to gradually recover centered on demand for eco-friendly, high-efficiency vessels."
