Mapo-gu to Hold Online Direct Order Market for Lunar New Year Celebration

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Mapo-gu (District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) will operate an online direct transaction market from January 26 to February 4 to celebrate the 2021 Lunar New Year.

This market was prepared to support farmers struggling due to the spread of COVID-19 and to supply residents with safe and reliable high-quality agricultural products and ancestral ritual items.

Twenty local governments nationwide, including the district’s sister cities Gochang-gun, Gokseong-gun, Sinan-gun, Yecheon-gun, Cheongyang-gun, as well as Gyeongsan-si, Sokcho-si, and Chuncheon-si, will participate to provide excellent quality specialty products.

The items for sale include a total of 31 specialty products and agricultural products such as eco-friendly rice, Korean beef (Hanwoo), kimchi, dried vegetables, apples, traditional Korean sweets (Hangwa), and dried persimmons, which can be purchased at prices up to 30% cheaper than market prices.

In particular, this market will be held in a way that supports social distancing by replacing offline events with phone orders, and sellers will deliver products directly from the production site to buyers.

Those who wish to purchase can check the items for sale through the Mapo-gu website or promotional materials available at 16 community service centers, then place orders by phone with the Mapo-gu Office Regional Economy Division.

Meanwhile, despite difficulties in opening offline markets last year due to COVID-19, the district operated online direct transaction markets during holidays when consumption of agricultural and specialty products increases, and a salted shrimp market during kimchi-making season in a non-face-to-face manner, allowing residents to conveniently purchase products from production sites without complicated distribution processes.

Moreover, non-face-to-face direct transaction markets to support farmers facing difficulties due to COVID-19 were held regularly, providing producers with opportunities to expand sales channels.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “This phone-order direct transaction market is an opportunity to support farmers struggling to open sales channels due to COVID-19 and for residents to purchase high-quality agricultural products at affordable prices. We ask for the active interest of all residents.”
