[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Citizens who erected the 'Statue of Peace' reported to the police a person who dressed the statue in a Japanese brand Descente padding and then disappeared.
The Gangdong-gu Citizens' Committee for the Preservation of the Statue of Peace announced on the 25th that they filed a complaint with the Gangdong Police Station against an unidentified person who dressed the statue installed in front of the Gangdong-gu Office in Seoul in Descente padding, on charges of insult and defamation.
According to the complaint, on the morning of the 22nd, the statue was found wearing Descente padding. Next to the statue, there was also a bag containing Descente shoe boxes, shoes of the same brand, and socks. It has not yet been confirmed who left these items and for what reason.
The committee stated, "The act of the accused dressing the statue in products from a Japanese company targeted by the boycott, and unlawfully leaving dirty sneakers, foul-smelling socks, and training clothes, is an intentional insult and defamation of the pride and dignity of the committee and the residents of Gangdong-gu." They explained the reason for the complaint, saying, "It is an anti-human rights and anti-humanitarian act that insults and defames the victims of Japanese military sexual slavery during the Japanese colonial period, causing them further wounds."
Meanwhile, the statue was erected in August 2019 through fundraising promoted by the committee, with about 1,000 citizens participating and raising approximately 50 million won at that time.
