Gwangju Dong-gu Selected for 'Small but Strong Potential Tourism Site Development Project'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 25th that it was the only autonomous district in Gwangju to be selected for the “Small-scale Potential Tourism Site Discovery and Development” contest project hosted by the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Tourism Organization, securing a project fund of 150 million KRW.

The “Small-scale Potential Tourism Site Development Project” is a program aimed at discovering places with potential to grow into promising tourist destinations for balanced regional tourism development and fostering them into new tourist attractions through systematic marketing. Dong-gu achieved the remarkable feat of being the only district selected in Gwangju.

The selected site, “Dongmyeong-dong Cultural Village,” is an area that Gwangju is focusing on cultivating as a cultural village embodying the essence of Gwangju. It is a district with high potential for growth as an urban tourist destination preserving the unique identity of Dongmyeong-dong, including its alleys and old buildings.

Dongmyeong-dong is adjacent to the nearby National Asian Culture Complex, Jeonil 245, Chungjang-ro, Geumnam-ro, and Art Street, holding both tangible and intangible cultural assets.

Recently, it has been transforming alongside urban regeneration projects, but its small alleys still retain their old charm, emerging as a popular spot among young people and tourists with unique cafes and restaurants.

Dong-gu and the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Tourism Organization plan to foster Dongmyeong-dong as a new tourist attraction by building the “Small-scale Potential Tourism Site” through ▲ expert consulting ▲ travel course development ▲ tourism product marketing support ▲ production of online and offline promotional content and promotional activities.

They also plan to develop various tourism resources and products to establish “Dongmyeong-dong Cultural Village” as a representative tourist destination of Gwangju.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “Dongmyeong-dong is a beautiful neighborhood where taste and style, past and present coexist within quaint alleys,” adding, “We hope that this contest selection will lead to bustling tourists and the recovery of the alley economy and local economy.”
