[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province will conduct an emergency inspection of the operation status, including breeding facilities and environment, at small-scale city and county direct management and private consignment animal protection centers within the province from the 25th to the 29th.

Gangwon Province stated on the 23rd, "Recently, problems such as abuse acts like euthanizing animals while conscious at consigned animal protection centers, consigning dog breeding farms to animal protection centers, poor conditions such as raised floors, insects living in water bowls, and feeding moldy feed have been revealed."

The inspection targets are two directly managed centers (Samcheok and Cheorwon) and seven consigned centers (Taebaek, Yeongwol, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon (2), Yanggu, and Goseong) animal protection centers.

The main inspection items include gaps in breeding cages, insufficient heating facilities, and cleanliness issues of feed and water. If inappropriate operations, violations of regulations, or inadequate facilities are confirmed as a result of the inspection, immediate corrective actions and measures to prevent recurrence will be implemented.

In particular, if serious illegal acts such as animal abuse are detected, strict measures including prosecution will be taken according to relevant regulations. This inspection is conducted jointly by city and county authorities in accordance with Article 39 (Entry and Inspection, etc.) of the Animal Protection Act.

Seo Jong-eok, Director of the Animal Quarantine Division, stated, "We plan to continuously strengthen and promote animal protection and welfare policies where animals are protected and respected, including expanding animal protection infrastructure and spreading a mature companion animal culture through campaigns."
