Brazil COVID-19 Deaths Reach 215,000... 0.1% of Total Population

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The cumulative death toll from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Brazil has surpassed 0.1% of the total population.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health on the 22nd (local time), the cumulative number of deaths increased by 1,096 from the previous day to 215,243. The cumulative death toll has already exceeded 0.1% of the total population of 211.8 million, meaning more than one death per 1,000 people. The daily death toll has exceeded 1,000 for four consecutive days from the 19th to the 22nd.

The cumulative number of confirmed cases was recorded at 8,753,920, an increase of 56,552 from the previous day. New confirmed cases exceeded 60,000 for two consecutive days on the 19th and 20th but fell below 60,000 on the previous day and the 22nd.

Meanwhile, following the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) of the Ministry of Health’s additional emergency use approval for the COVID-19 vaccine from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, the arrival of the vaccine from the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has eased the vaccine supply situation somewhat.

The National Health Surveillance Agency approved emergency use of 6 million doses out of 10.8 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine secured through cooperation with the Butantan Institute under the S?o Paulo state government at the end of last year, and on this day approved the remaining 4.8 million doses.

The 2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a research institution affiliated with the Ministry of Health, was to import from India, were delayed but arrived on this day via an international airport near S?o Paulo city.

The Ministry of Health plans to supply AstraZeneca vaccines to each region starting from the 23rd.
