Seocho-gu Implements Eco Mileage Seasonal Fine Dust Management System

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu will implement the ‘Eco Mileage Fine Dust Seasonal Management System’ from December to March, when high concentrations of fine dust frequently occur, to encourage residents to actively participate in reducing fine dust and greenhouse gases.

‘Eco Mileage’ is a system in Seoul where households, businesses, and schools earn mileage points based on their greenhouse gas reduction performance by saving energy such as electricity, water, and city gas (district heating). In particular, the ‘Fine Dust Seasonal Management System’ is a focused management measure that implements stronger reduction policies during the four months from December to March, when high concentrations of fine dust frequently occur, aiming to reduce fine dust generated by winter heating usage.

During the four-month period, Eco Mileage members who reduce their energy usage by 20% or more compared to the average usage during the same period in the previous two years will receive 10,000 mileage points per household, and those who reduce by 30% or more will receive up to 12,000 mileage points per household as special points.

The mileage accumulated through energy savings can be used in various ways such as paying local taxes, purchasing traditional market gift certificates, deducting apartment management fees, or donating to energy-poor households.

Applications for enrollment can be made through the Eco Mileage website, or by visiting a nearby community service center or the Climate and Environment Division of Seocho-gu Office.

Meanwhile, since July last year, the district has proactively developed climate change response policies reflecting local characteristics in line with the government’s Green New Deal announcement. The ‘Seocho-type Green New Deal Policy’ consists of three main areas: building a participatory infrastructure, advancing green policies, and expanding green infrastructure. This policy has been implemented to promptly respond to worsening environmental issues and create a safe Seocho-gu free from various environmental pollutants.

A district official stated, “At a time when climate change is recognized as a crisis, saving energy and reducing greenhouse gases is the biggest challenge we must solve. Eco Mileage is the first step toward energy saving, and we ask for the active participation and practice of residents.”
