[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 22nd, Pohang City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the 'Forest Management Complex Development Project' at the Pohang City Forestry Cooperative Forest Village.

On this day, through the MOU, the two organizations agreed to jointly cooperate in financial and administrative support, as well as the establishment and implementation of phased project plans for the creation of a 'Leading Forest Management Complex.'

The 'Leading Forest Management Complex Development Project' is a project promoted through a nationwide contest by the Korea Forest Service, aiming to prevent indiscriminate development in areas with small-scale private forest ownership and to manage forests abundantly.

On September 25th last year, the Seokgye-ri and Sangsa-ri districts in Jukjang-myeon were finally selected as a 'Leading Forest Management Complex,' and from this year until 2030, Pohang City will receive a total project budget support of 7.5 billion KRW (5.2 billion KRW from the national government). The three locations selected as leading management complexes in 2021 are Pohang, Muju, and Gokseong.

Until recently, Pohang City has been planning to create a collective and scaled forest management complex, which was previously evaluated only for its public value, to cultivate forest products such as wild raspberries and Acanthopanax in the short term to generate profits. Additionally, as a long-term income project, they plan to systematically manage forests by planting and maintaining Usan Gorosoe trees.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang City expressed his expectations, saying, "Through the MOU with the Pohang City Forestry Cooperative, we will make it the nation's best leading forest management complex," and added, "It will greatly contribute to the population policy of 510,000 people in Pohang by creating good jobs in agricultural and fishing villages."
