[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Recently, with growing interest in healthy lifestyles due to COVID-19, the number of urban farmers consuming fresh vegetables they grow themselves is increasing.
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is recruiting participants for the 2021 Jungnangcheon Urban Agriculture Experience Learning Center to meet the rising demand for urban agriculture.
The recruitment fields and number of participants are ▲340 people aged 60 and over ▲40 people with disabilities ▲10 multicultural families ▲240 general participants, totaling 630 people. To allow diverse participants to experience urban agriculture, only one person per household can apply in one category.
The participation fee is 10,000 KRW, and residents wishing to participate can apply on the Dongdaemun-gu Office website (Citizen Participation → Online Application) from the 25th of this month until the 8th of next month.
The district will select participants through a computerized lottery and notify them individually on March 15. Results can also be checked on the district office website. Selected participants will be provided with one garden plot (approximately 5㎡).
The urban agriculture experience learning center covers a total area of 4,500㎡ and is located next to the 2nd Sports Park on the Jungnangcheon riverside under Jangan Bridge. It will operate from April to the end of November.
The district supports participants by providing leafy vegetable seedlings, pest control, watering facilities, and fertilization to facilitate farming. Soil and crop heavy metal contamination levels are regularly tested to help produce healthy food.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We hope families create happy memories tending their garden plots together at the urban agriculture experience learning center and enjoy the joy of harvesting vegetables they have grown with their own sweat.”
