Enclosure Disposal of Outdoor Coal Yard, Cokes Yard, and Steelmaking Slag Dumping Site
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Gwangyang City announced on the 22nd that it took administrative measures on the 15th, judging that the dust suppression measures at Gwangyang Steelworks were insufficient.
Since the arrival of raw coal in 1983, Gwangyang Steelworks has been storing coal in an open outdoor yard, with only some coal stored in 23 silos.
The city stated that although the steelworks implements suppression measures such as installing dust nets, covers, applying hardeners, and sprinkling water in the outdoor yard, these measures alone have limitations in reducing dust due to the characteristics of large-scale facilities. The city continuously encouraged improvement plans, but as the steelworks did not improve on its own, it issued an improvement order.
The administrative measures mainly involve enclosing the open yards where coal and coke are stored, as well as the steel slag dumping site.
Additionally, measures were taken to install additional dust and windbreak forests or dust barriers between the outdoor yard and the facility building.
Hyundai Steel in Dangjin, Chungnam Province, operates its outdoor yard in an enclosed manner, and some coal power plants are even pursuing early closures as part of various fine dust reduction policies.
In line with this trend, the global company POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks is also required to make bold environmental improvements such as enclosing the yard.
Kim Jae-hee, head of the Environment Division, said, “We will continue to monitor compliance with the administrative measures and strictly punish any illegal or improper matters. We will do our best to achieve environmental improvements that citizens can tangibly feel as soon as possible.”
