[Asia Economy Reporter La Youngcheol] The Nuruk Research Institute, a key foundation for revitalizing the traditional liquor industry in Chuncheon, is finally opening its doors.
Chuncheon City and Kangwon National University announced on the 22nd, "The Nuruk Research Institute has completed all preparations necessary for full-scale research, including equipping the required research equipment."
Nuruk refers to a fermenting agent made by cultivating enzyme-containing mold on grains, and it is an essential research field for revitalizing the liquor industry.
The Nuruk Research Institute conducts research on collecting useful nuruk microorganisms, discovering excellent strains, and studying the distribution and characteristics of fermenting microorganisms in nuruk according to manufacturing conditions.
In particular, it plays roles in distributing excellent strains to local companies, liquor manufacturing, quality evaluation, and education.
The city expects that through the Nuruk Research Institute, the Chuncheon-type New Deal and the green bio industry will be linked to greatly develop the local liquor industry in Chuncheon.
Additionally, along with the Nuruk Research Institute, the city plans to intensively foster the local liquor industry to restore the traditional home-brewed liquor culture (Ga-yangju) that disappeared due to past Japanese exploitation and to revive Korea’s liquor culture.
This year, major nationwide events such as the Chuncheon Liquor Festa (October) and the Korea Famous Liquor Awards (November) will be held to promote Chuncheon as the city of liquor.
