[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] The leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea announced on the 22nd that they will definitely pass the special law for the construction of Gadeokdo New Airport within the February extraordinary session of the National Assembly.

Lee Nak-yeon, the party leader, said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, “Yesterday, I visited Gadeokdo, which Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) hope to designate as the site for the new airport,” and added, “Gadeok New Airport is the future of Bu-Ul-Gyeong.”

He emphasized, “We cannot talk about Busan’s future without including the airport,” and stated, “We will ensure that the Gadeok New Airport, initiated by President Roh Moo-hyun, is completed under the Moon Jae-in administration.”

Lee said, “We will definitely pass the special law during the February extraordinary session of the National Assembly,” and urged the opposition parties to join in.

Kim Tae-nyeon, the floor leader, also said at the meeting, “The Democratic Party reiterates that we will definitely pass the special law for Gadeokdo New Airport in the February National Assembly as promised.”

Kim pointed out, “Since 2003, the Democratic Party has consistently maintained the position of constructing a Southeast Gateway Airport in Gadeokdo,” and criticized, “We will not engage in irresponsible politics that only drags time and stirs regional conflicts with indecisive administration for election considerations like the Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye administrations.”

He expressed his determination for the passage of the special law, saying, “Gadeokdo has already been thoroughly reviewed as the Southeast Gateway Airport,” and “Since it has been delayed by 18 years, construction must be promoted with a sense of urgency.”
