‘Daejeon Fire 119 Ambulance Bell Rang’ Every 7 Minutes

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Last year, Daejeon Fire Department 119 paramedics were dispatched to the scene approximately once every 7 minutes.

The Daejeon Fire Headquarters announced on the 22nd that an analysis of last year's emergency medical service activities showed a total of 73,926 dispatches, indicating that 119 paramedics were dispatched to the scene once every 7 minutes.

Through this, the Daejeon Fire Headquarters explained that an average of 202 citizens per day benefited from emergency medical services.

However, the number of dispatches last year slightly decreased compared to 2019 (77,490 cases). This is interpreted as a result of the implementation of social distancing measures due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). As citizens voluntarily refrained from outdoor activities, various accidents and the number of 119 paramedic dispatches also decreased accordingly.

Although the number of emergency dispatches decreased, the intensity of work performed by 119 paramedics at the scene increased. This is due to the requirement to wear protective suits during field dispatches because of COVID-19, as well as the increase in additional tasks such as disinfection activities.

Last year, the number of COVID-19 related dispatches by Daejeon Fire Department 119 paramedics totaled 3,928 cases, of which 3,632 were transports of suspected patients, 163 were transports of confirmed patients, and 162 were transports for specimen testing.

Kim Tae-han, head of the Daejeon Fire Headquarters, stated, “Daejeon Fire Department will utilize emergency activity statistical data to establish more efficient measures and strive to provide emergency services that ensure the safety of citizens.”
