Applying Baekje Culture-Inspired Design in Songpa! Pungnap Toseong Trail Signboard

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su), the capital of Baekje during the Hanseong period 2,000 years ago, is developing designs using related cultural assets and applying them diversely to public facilities.

In December last year, the district created an exploration trail of Pungnap Earthen Fortress linked with the Songpa Dullegil trail, producing and installing signboards using the key relic, the Sumaksa pattern, from Baekje Hanseong period cultural assets.

The Sumaksa used is the ‘Flower Pattern Sumaksa’ excavated from the Pungnap-dong earthen fortress, characterized by a simple expression of flower buds and stems.

The district stylized these patterns in three stages and created a total of five design patterns to allow various combinations.

Additionally, the district developed designs using cultural assets excavated from Mongchon Earthen Fortress, Seokchon-dong Tumuli Cluster, and Bangi-dong Tumuli Cluster, producing a Baekje Hanseong Period Cultural Asset Design Collection in December 2019.

The collection includes modern reinterpretations of designs such as Chiljido (Seven-Branched Sword), Bronze Chodu (bronze spearhead), arrowheads, belt ornaments, and pottery, enabling efficient use in various fields.

Also, it expanded the scope of design use by including four representative colors of the Baekje Hanseong period?red used in official robes, soil colors extracted from the cross-section of the earthen fortress layers?and two colors representing Songpa-gu.

Recently, the district has actively applied the designs from the collection to public facilities to promote the historical significance of Songpa-gu. For example, Sumaksa patterned paving blocks were used on the Moonlight Walkway installed to improve nighttime pedestrian environments around the eastern fortress wall of Pungnap Earthen Fortress, and Baekje colors were used to create resident rest areas called Cheongunmak and Jaunmak. New designs of Bronze Chodu and Chiljido were applied to tree protection zones in the Pungnap-dong area.

In the future, the district plans to actively utilize cultural asset designs not only for public environment improvements but also in the construction of the new Pungnap 2-dong Complex Office Building, creating public facilities befitting the Baekje royal capital.

Mayor Park Seong-su stated, “Songpa-gu is the only place in Seoul where cultural heritage from the Baekje Hanseong period remains,” adding, “We will gradually expand the developed designs to all public facilities and extend their application to private facilities as well, making it a historic city preserving Baekje culture.”
