[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] The People Power Party has closed the registration for the Seoul and Busan mayoral by-election primary candidates, with 14 applicants for Seoul and 9 for Busan.


The People Power Party announced on the 21st that it has closed the application process for nominations for the by-elections to be held on April 7.


Applicants for the Seoul mayoral nomination included former Liberty Korea Party floor leader Na Kyung-won, former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Seocho District Mayor Cho Eun-hee, former lawmaker Oh Shin-hwan, and former Songpa District Mayor Park Chun-hee. Also registered were former lawmaker Lee Jong-gu, former People Power Party Secretary-General Kim Seon-dong, former Consul General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Shanghai Kim Jeong-gi, prospective candidate Kang Seong-hyun, Kim Geun-sik, head of the Seoul Songpa-byeong party committee, former Seoul Athletics Federation President Bae Young-gu, Honorary Chairman of the Korea Foreign Enterprises Association Lee Seung-hyun, former Liberty Korea Party party committee chairman Cho Dae-won, and Han Dae-seong, recipient of the 2014 Global PhD Fellowship.


For the Busan mayoral race, Professor Park Hyung-joon of Dong-A University Graduate School of International Studies, former lawmakers Lee Eon-ju, Park Min-sik, and Lee Jin-bok have completed registration. Also applying were Busan Foreign Language University Honorary Professor Kim Gwi-soon, former Busan Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Park Seong-hoon, current chairman of the Busan Welfare 21 General Volunteer Association Oh Seung-cheol, former Blue House National Task Secretary Office administrator Lee Kyung-man, and Jeon Seong-ha, CEO of LF Energy.


The Nomination Management Committee will announce the preliminary primary candidates on the 26th after document screening. Four candidates will advance to the main primary from the preliminary round.
