Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, Visits Cultural Heritage Administration... Full Effort to Resolve Issues and Secure National Funding

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Heo Seok, mayor of Suncheon, visited the Cultural Heritage Administration and held a meeting with Kim Hyun-mo, head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, to propose major pending projects related to cultural heritage in Suncheon City and actively requested support such as securing national funds for museum construction and cultural heritage restoration, the mayor announced on the 21st.

On this day, Mayor Heo Seok met with Kim Hyun-mo and expressed gratitude for the designation of the Suncheon Hyanggyo Daeseongjeon as a treasure last year and for securing national funds for the regional cultural heritage utilization project this year. He also requested the designation of the cultural heritage “Palma-bi (八馬碑),” which is the origin of the selection of local officials and Cheongdeokbi and represents the spirit of integrity in the present era, as a treasure, and the promotion of the “Suncheon Waegyo Fortress Historic Site,” a historical site of overcoming the national crisis during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Jeongyujaeran), to a national historic site.

Additionally, he explained the plan to build a “Buddhist Folklore Museum” centered on Buddhist culture, which can represent Suncheon City, and had an in-depth discussion on the value of cultural heritage that can embody spiritual values.

Suncheon City is showing swift progress to establish a city brand as a World Cultural Heritage site by obtaining active cooperation from central government departments in the preservation, management, and utilization of cultural heritage.

Mayor Heo Seok said, “Suncheon is well known for its beautiful ecological environment and well-preserved historical resources, and we plan to actively discover lesser-known cultural heritage as well.” He added, “We will continue to visit government departments and do our best to secure the 2022 budget.”
