[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jeong Seung-hyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 21st that Mayor Kim Jong-sik of Mokpo participated in the "Children's Traffic Safety Relay Challenge" on the 20th to establish a culture of practicing traffic safety within school zones.

This challenge is organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to build national consensus on preventing traffic accidents in school zones. Participants share photos holding placards with traffic safety messages on SNS and then nominate three people to continue the relay.

Mayor Kim joined the challenge after being nominated by Lim Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and posted a photo on his SNS holding a placard that read, "In school zones: Stop at 1 step, look both ways at 2 sides, wait for 3 seconds, prevent 4 dangers."

Mayor Kim Jong-sik stated, "Mokpo City is expanding facilities for a safe walking environment for children, including 107 yellow carpets, 13 yellow traffic lights, and 9 traffic enforcement cameras," adding, "We will continue to make greater efforts for children's traffic safety."

He continued, "A country where children are safe is a happy Korea, a Korea with a future," and urged participation in establishing a culture of children's traffic safety by saying, "Please start with small actions in daily life for children's safety."

Mayor Kim nominated Park In-bae, Chief of Mokpo Police Station, Park Chang-su, Chairman of Mokpo City Council, and Lee Han-cheol, President of Mokpo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as the next participants.

To prevent traffic accidents caused by illegal parking in school zones, Mokpo City installed no-parking signs on roads in front of the main gates of 33 elementary schools and completed painting yellow double lines and lane markings.

The city is continuously installing yellow carpets, which are painted yellow to help drivers easily recognize children, as well as yellow traffic lights and enforcement cameras (for speeding and signal violations) within school zones.
