Kumho Tire Files Patent for Smart Tire System... Commercialization in Second Half of Year Kumho Tire Tire Sensor Module

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Kumho Tire announced on the 21st that it recently obtained KC certification for tire sensor modules and wireless communication devices, as well as domestic communication certification, and has filed a patent for a tire information management system.

Kumho Tire is collaborating with electronic communication specialists such as Samjin Co., Ltd. and Rootlink Co., Ltd. to develop and manufacture sensor modules and wireless communication devices for the commercialization of smart tire systems. They are currently conducting final operational tests ahead of a planned release in the second half of the year.

The smart tire system consists of sensor modules installed inside each tire and a dedicated wireless communication device installed in the driver's seat. It monitors tire conditions such as air pressure, temperature, driving time, and acceleration during driving, and sends warnings and alerts to the driver to prevent accidents.

Once commercialized, drivers of regular passenger cars will be able to easily and conveniently manage tire and related information through a smartphone application. In particular, by linking with telecommunications companies and related organizations, it will be possible to quickly check road conditions such as rapid weather changes, potholes, bumps, and black ice, providing safer and more convenient traffic information. Additionally, when buses, taxis, trucks, and vehicle-sharing companies utilize this system, they can manage tires and vehicle operations more economically and efficiently through practical tire and vehicle operation information.

Based on the ongoing commercial vehicle test information, Kumho Tire is finalizing the integrated central tire information management system and plans to commercialize it within the second half of the year. Above all, due to the nature of the system, Kumho Tire is currently discussing technical cooperation with major domestic telecommunications companies to utilize a more diverse database and driving information. Once collaboration with telecom companies progresses, it is expected that more accurate and diverse services will be provided.

Jung Il-taek, Vice President and Head of Research at Kumho Tire, said, "We live in an era of rapid development that is hard to measure. Kumho Tire has consistently devoted itself to research and development (R&D) even in difficult circumstances, believing that there is no future if we do not prepare ahead of these environmental changes." He added, "We will continue to strive to provide customers with a more convenient and safer mobility environment through collaboration with automakers, telecommunications companies, and related organizations."
