'Purple Outfits Symbolizing Women and Minorities, Fist Bump with Obama'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Kamala Harris, the first Asian-American, Black, and female Vice President of the United States, entered the White House after completing events including the inauguration ceremony.
Sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States, she took the oath of office in front of Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina female federal Supreme Court Justice, according to reports by The New York Times and others on the 20th (local time).
On this day, Vice President Harris's purple suit, symbolizing women, minorities, and unity, also drew attention. Purple was the symbolic color used during the Democratic primary campaign in the last presidential election.
The New York Times stated, "This carries the meaning of honoring Shirley Chisholm, who ran for president decades ago as a Black woman." CNN evaluated, "Harris stands at one of the most important moments in American history, representing many women and people of color in the United States."
Before the inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, Vice President Harris exchanged fist bumps with former President Barack Obama. Obama said, "Very proud," while bumping fists.
The vice presidential security was handled by Eugene Goodman, a Black police officer hailed as a hero for preventing rioters from storming the Senate chamber during the pro-Trump mob's breach of the federal Capitol.
President Joe Biden announced the change of commander-in-chief to the U.S. and the world with a review of the honor guard, and began his first steps by visiting the National Cemetery with Vice President Harris to honor the dedication of unknown soldiers.
Instead of the traditional White House ball held on the night of the presidential inauguration, this time a more down-to-earth celebration event featuring a performance hosted by actor Tom Hanks is scheduled to conclude the inauguration day.
