New Rest Area Built at Euljiro 6-ga 270-14, Basement 1 to 7 Floors Above Ground, About 200 Pyeong... Accommodates 120 Workers Including Public Officials and Park Greenery Field Workers
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) is constructing a dedicated rest area of about 200 pyeong for field workers such as public workers.
Public workers, another name for sanitation workers, play a crucial role in supporting residents' daily lives invisibly by cleaning street-side trash and trash bins every early morning.
Recently, the government also identified public workers as essential workers who maintain social functions amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The district has planned to build a dedicated rest area for field public workers at 270-14 Euljiro 5-ga, with a scale from basement level 1 to the 7th floor above ground, and began full-scale construction earlier this month.
The expected completion date is this coming October.
Through this, a new dedicated rest and office space will be created for about 120 Jung-gu field workers, including environmental public workers who clean a total of 11 routes in the central area from Cheonggyecheon-ro to Jangchungdan-ro, as well as street tree and park managers.
Currently, Jung-gu public workers' rest rooms are installed in small-scale locations here and there. Some are located in building basements with poor ventilation, and some were completely destroyed by fire three years ago, resulting in temporary accommodations in nearby senior centers and other vacant spaces, indicating the need for improvement.
With the construction of this dedicated rest area, field workers will be able to comfortably change clothes, rest, and eat in a more pleasant environment, as well as avoid extreme cold and heat caused by weather changes.
A representative from the Jung-gu Office Cleaning Administration Department stated, "We are proceeding with the construction by reflecting the opinions of workers as much as possible, from floor layout to interior design, to provide optimal convenience facilities for field workers such as public workers."
Seoyangho, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, "Securing a dedicated rest area for field workers such as public workers was one of the major improvements I discovered while walking around Jung-gu whenever I had free time. Especially, the central area, including Euljiro and Chungmuro, has a high floating population and a large amount of illegal dumping, so the efforts of field workers such as public workers are relatively greater. I hope this new construction will further improve the working conditions of Jung-gu field workers, and we will continue to create a better working environment for essential workers in Jung-gu."
