President Hassan Rouhani: "Trump's 4 Years Brought Oppression and Corruption... A Divided America Is Trump's Legacy"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reportedly said that "President Trump brought oppression and corruption for four years," according to Iran's IRNA on the 20th (local time), referring to outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the report, President Rouhani stated at the Cabinet meeting that "Today, Trump's black notebook will be closed forever. A divided and polarized America is the legacy Trump left behind for four years."
Iran had appeared to improve relations by reaching the nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with the U.S. during President Barack Obama's administration in 2015. However, President Trump unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and reinstated sanctions against Iran, worsening relations between the two countries.
President Rouhani also addressed President-elect Joe Biden and his administration, saying, "Now Trump is dead, and the JCPOA is alive," and emphasized, "Iran hopes that the U.S. leadership will return to the agreement and international law. If that happens, Iran will fulfill all its commitments."
