[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Professor Noh Seong-won of the Department of Psychiatry at Hanyang University Hospital recently received a commendation from the Minister of Justice for his contributions to the development of crime prevention and protective administration in the local community.
Since 2017, Professor Noh has been serving as a member of the Probation Council at the Seoul Eastern District Court. He was highly recognized for his advice on treatment and effective management measures to prevent recidivism among individuals with a high likelihood of committing violent crimes, such as those intoxicated, drug users, and patients with mental illnesses, contributing to the advancement of the probation system.
Professor Noh stated, “Providing appropriate treatment such as early diagnosis, psychological therapy programs, and medication to mentally ill individuals with a high risk of reoffending can reduce the probability of recidivism. Since 2017, none of the treatment order recipients referred to me have reoffended due to proper treatment, which is a very positive outcome. I will continue to actively cooperate to ensure the effective establishment of the treatment order system.”
Meanwhile, Professor Noh graduated from Hanyang University College of Medicine and earned his master's and doctoral degrees from the same graduate school. He currently serves as a director of the Korean Association on Smoking and Health, financial director of the Korean Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, a member of the Examination Committee of the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association, and a director of the Asia-Pacific Society for Alcohol and Addiction Research. He has received awards such as the Young Investigator Award from the American College of Clinical Psychopharmacology and the Central Psychiatry Paper Award from the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association.
