[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 20th that it has selected 12 local governments, including Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Incheon, and Daegu, as leading local governments for the housing upgrade support project for vulnerable housing groups through a public contest.

The selected local governments will utilize regional welfare resources such as housing welfare centers and social welfare centers to identify tenants wishing to move to rental housing.

They plan to provide close support in finding desired housing for tenants wishing to move to rental housing identified through one-on-one counseling, and to assist in the adaptation process to ensure that local welfare services are not interrupted even after moving into public rental housing.

Housing support will also be actively provided for vulnerable groups living in semi-basement units, who were added as relocation support targets for vulnerable housing groups in the second half of last year.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the priority support performance for vulnerable housing groups living in small rooms and goshiwon (small, cheap rooms for students or workers) to public rental housing is also on the rise.

Following 1,070 units in 2016, 1,098 units in 2017, 1,638 units in 2018, and 3,905 units in 2019, 5,502 units of public rental housing were given priority support to vulnerable housing groups last year.

The Ministry emphasized, "We will continue to build a meticulous housing welfare delivery system to prevent socially disadvantaged vulnerable housing groups from being marginalized due to blind spots in housing welfare, and strengthen regional welfare capacity through collaboration with local governments."
