[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Electronics is investing 50 billion KRW to establish its Changwon plant, a key global home appliance production base, as a 'smart factory.'
On the 20th, LG Electronics announced that it signed an 'Investment Agreement for the Establishment of an Integrated Home Appliance Testing Lab' at the Gyeongnam Provincial Government's main conference room, attended by key figures including Ryu Jae-cheol, Head of the H&A Business Division, Kim Kyung-soo, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, and Heo Seong-moo, Mayor of Changwon.
Through this agreement, LG Electronics plans to invest approximately 50 billion KRW starting next month. This investment will be used to build a large-scale testing facility that integrates existing home appliance testing labs at Changwon Plant 2. The new integrated testing lab will be constructed over an area of about 18,800 square meters, spanning from the basement first floor to the sixth floor above ground.
The integrated testing lab will serve as infrastructure to accelerate the digital transformation of home appliance development. During testing, various sensors will collect digitized big data, which all developers can analyze remotely using a monitoring system. The lab will also be equipped with various real-use environments. It plans to conduct tests to respond to different standards by country, verify performance, and test reliability.
LG Electronics stated, "We expect to shorten the development period of innovative new products while conducting more thorough quality verification." The testing labs for various home appliances, from laundry care appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and stylers to premium cleaning appliances like cordless vacuum cleaners and robot vacuum cleaners, will be integrated into one to enhance development efficiency.
Vice President Ryu said, "With this investment agreement, we have secured an advanced integrated testing lab that can continue innovation in the home appliance field," adding, "We will complete the Changwon plant as the world's best smart factory capable of leading the global premium home appliance market."
