Last Year, 288 Overloaded Vehicle Violations Detected, Fines Totaling 161 Million KRW Imposed
Gyeongnam Province operates an overweight enforcement team consisting of one fixed checkpoint, four mobile enforcement units, and a total of 31 personnel.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] The Gyeongsangnam-do Road Management Office conducts joint crackdowns every year to eradicate overloaded vehicles that cause major casualties and road damage.
Overloaded vehicles refer to those exceeding a total weight of 40 tons, axle weight of 10 tons, width of 2.5 meters, height of 4.2 meters, or length of 16.7 meters, according to Article 77 of the Road Act.
Last year, 288 cases of overloaded vehicles were detected through crackdowns, resulting in fines totaling 161 million KRW.
Analysis of enforcement data shows that the main detection areas are Haman, Changwon, and Goseong in that order. The detection period is concentrated between January and April.
Regarding violations, axle weight excess accounted for 192 cases (67%), width 39 cases (13%), height 32 cases (11%), total weight 22 cases (8%), and length 3 cases (1%).
It is known that one overloaded vehicle with an axle load of 11 tons causes road damage equivalent to that caused by 110,000 passenger cars, and it is considered a major cause of large-scale accidents.
Song Sangjun, head of the provincial Road Management Office, stated, "We will do our best to secure road facilities and vehicle safety by cracking down on areas where overloaded vehicle operation is frequent."
