[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] The Pohang Suseong Shooting Range Opposition Committee announced on the 20th that it visited the Sejong Government Complex on the 19th to file a grievance petition for the cancellation of Apache helicopter shooting training and the complete closure of the Suseong Shooting Range.
The opposition committee stated, "The residents of Janggi-myeon, Pohang, have been experiencing extreme anxiety and fear due to noise, vibrations, and forest fires caused by year-round continuous shooting training for over 60 years," adding, "We can no longer endure the ongoing physical, mental, and material damages."
The grievance petition was submitted with signatures from about 2,800 residents of Janggi-myeon, Pohang, and nearby Guryongpo-eup and Donghae-myeon, who wish for the complete closure of the Pohang Suseong Shooting Range and the cancellation of the U.S. Forces Korea Apache helicopter shooting training.
Cho Hyun-cheok, the representative of the opposition committee, emphasized, "Although it was fortunate to avoid immediate physical conflict due to the Ministry of National Defense's decision last November to postpone the U.S. Forces Korea helicopter shooting training, the fact that it was a postponement and not a cancellation means there is still room for helicopter shooting training, as seen in the terrain reconnaissance flight by Apache helicopters over the Suseong Shooting Range area on the 14th."
