[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The cumulative death toll from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the United States surpassed 400,000 on the 19th (local time).

The cumulative number of confirmed cases also exceeded 24 million. This means that 1 in 14 Americans has been infected with COVID-19.

Johns Hopkins University reported on the 19th (local time) that the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. was approximately 24,163,000, and the cumulative death toll was about 400,000.

AP noted, "It took four months to reach the first 100,000 deaths, but it took just over a month to go from 300,000 to 400,000 deaths."

CNN reported that more than 60% of the 24 million cumulative infections occurred after the U.S. presidential election on November 3 last year. AP also pointed out that the cumulative death toll exceeded 400,000 a day before President Donald Trump's departure, stating, "Public health experts have evaluated his handling of the (COVID-19) crisis as a notable failure."
