"Biden Administration Inauguration Calls for Efforts by Korean Government and Korean-American Community in the U.S."
"Changes in Korean-American Status Witnessed Through Georgia Elections"
"Grassroots Movement for Peace on the Korean Peninsula to Continue"
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] "I hope that Joe Biden, the President-elect of the United States who understood his grandfather's Sunshine Policy, will work closely with President Moon Jae-in to reopen the path to peace on the Korean Peninsula."
Kim Jong-dae, the late President Kim Dae-jung's grandson and the representative of the Re’Generation Movement, who is active as a refugee education activist in the United States, expressed expectations that the launch of the Biden administration will be a great opportunity not only for the development of Korea-US relations but also for peace on the Korean Peninsula. President-elect Biden has named Kim Dae-jung as the leader he respects most and has actively supported his Sunshine Policy.
In a recent phone interview with Asia Economy, Kim emphasized that it is the first time since the DJ administration and the Bill Clinton administration that progressive forces are in power together in both the US and South Korea, stating, "The Korean government and Koreans in the US must work to ensure that peace on the Korean Peninsula is included in the Biden administration's priorities and make good use of this opportunity."
Kim is participating in the ‘Korea Peace Now’ movement, a Korean-American solidarity effort for peace on the Korean Peninsula. He also stressed that although many young Korean Americans are stepping up for peace on the Korean Peninsula, the movement needs to expand further.
Kim introduced that the role of Korean Americans was significant in the passage of the Korean American separated families reunion bill in the US House of Representatives last year. He explained, "The Korean War Armistice Resolution involved Koreans visiting federal lawmakers and persuading them directly, resulting in 50 lawmakers participating. This is the power of grassroots movements."
Kim said that watching the election situation in Georgia, which was a decisive factor in Biden's election victory, he realized that the political power of Korean Americans had changed. He stated, "I felt that the political power of Koreans and Asians has increased. The fact that four Korean-American members of Congress were elected is historic," and added, "The symbol of America is diversity. The more we participate, the higher the status of Korean Americans will rise, so I will actively join grassroots election campaigns."
Kim is the son of Kim Hong-eop, former lawmaker and the second son of former President Kim Dae-jung.
